Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of emotional and informational support intervention on the burden and depression of primary family caregivers caring hospitalized stroke patients.
Method: The research was a quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The participants were 30 primary family caregivers, 15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. A pre-test and a post-test were conducted to measure main variables. The emotional and informational support intervention program was executed 2 times for 2 weeks. Program consisted of education about stroke by guidebook and counseling, was given for the experimental group. Data were analyzed using ¥ö2, Fisher s exact test, and independent t-test with SPSS 14.0 program.
Results: There were statistically significant decrease in burden, but depression was not statistically significant by difference between a pre-test and a post-test in the experimental group compared to that in the control group.
Conclusion: The result of this study indicate that the Emotional and Informational Support Intervention program was effective in decreasing burden although not statistically significant reduction in depression. Therefore, it can be a way to reduce burden of primary caregivers caring stroke patients.
